The real cost of dating

Okay, so it’s no secret that I go on lots of dates. It’s also no secret that I don’t spend a whole lot on the first couple of dates. I keep things simple and fun so that I can get to know the person I out with.

This got me to thinking. How much are people spending on dates? I can normally get by with a maybe a few dollars in gas and spend less than twenty bucks and still be set up for follow on dates. But, I hear stories from friends and colleagues who say they spend an average of a couple hundred per date.

So, I looked into this and I found a breakdown of what a person spends on average per date in each state. Since most people still insist on dinner and movie followed with some kind of adult libation (wine or beer) I figured why not see what these costs.

The cost of dating

Before we get into the nitty-gritty. I did find that 1,000 people were polled by GiftCards.com in 2018. The average they came up with was that a person spends per month on a date is $146.00.

If you have listened to the show you know that I don’t do dinners and a movie. I have other reasons why I don’t do them. Here’s a financial reason if you need one. Across the United States people report that on average a dinner for two, movie tickets for two, and a bottle of cheap wine costs about $102.57. And you know how much about that person after talking with your mouth full, sitting in silence for over an hour, and getting drunk? Oh, and spending over $100 for the privilege?

Let’s get into this and how these prices of dating were made.

The cost of movie tickets came from the National Association of Theatre Owners. The cost of dinner for two came from a Zagat Survey. The cost of wine came from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It was then broken down by region of the country and then individual states. Additional costs such as transportation and sales tax, spirit tax were also factored in. AAA for the average cost of a gallon of gas and the Tax Foundation for taxes. Also factored was the mean income from the different regions of the country which came from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis. Another factor figured into the cost is the amount of art, entertainment, and recreation establishments per 100,000 population in the state.
